India observes its 70th year of being a republic today. With the ongoing civil rights movement in the country, 26th Jan is a momentous day for all those resisting. Here’s a list of book recommendations for anyone wanting to better understand the country in the context of current times.

The Constitution of India: Read it to know what the protestors at Shaheen Bagh and across the country are demanding. It is the equality before the law, equality of freedom, equality of movement, equality of opportunity and above all, equality of being an Indian. Drafted by B R Ambedkar, it is the social document that enables every Indian to reside and exercise one’s rights as an equal. In times when the current regime is forcing us to define ourselves by our religion, it is time we define ourselves as Indians, as stated by the Constitution.
