The pandemic could help women lead freer lives unlike before

“I don’t remember the last time I walked out of the house or wore a bra,” I claimed to my friend over a call last weekend. She chimed in and said, “Me either.” We both smiled in the comforting delight brought on by bra-free days.

While COVID-19 has forced us all into our homes, women especially, seem to have finally been freed off wearing the hideous thing called a bra. The uncomfortable, chest tightening, asphyxiating piece of clothing that regardless of its lace and colours, continues to be the bane of our lives.

Ever since I wore it for the first time, I remember wanting to take it off the minute I got the chance. Being at home with parents and siblings meant, that only happened after I snuck into bed. Things changed over the years and I created and nurtured spaces, where being at home meant not wearing a bra. For years, I was convinced that once I found the perfect brand, the irritation with wearing the bra would ease. That it would miraculously cease all the physical discomfort and I’d forget I was even wearing one. That day is yet to arrive.

The pandemic has allowed me and (I hope) countless other women to work and lead their days in a more comfortable manner. We are no longer living by the mercy of a society whose watchful eyes can…
